Alan Treharne was born in South Africa and came to the UK in 1976. He began studying Oriental Medicine in 1981 and was trained in England, Mainland China and the United States. He has studied Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. He works in private practice and lectures in both Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. He has had a wide exposure to treating a variety of complaints including dermatology, gynaecology, headaches and migraines, digestive disorders, gastrointestinal, urogenital, muscular skeletal, neurological and reproductive disorders.

RESPONSIBILITIES
As Course Leader, Lecturer and Clinical Supervisor of the Chinese Medical Practice Alan Treharne has overall responsibility for the course. This involves curriculum development, scheduling the staff, overseeing the content and design of student course notes, supervising student tutorials, making student assessments, grading papers, chairing Supervisor/Lecturer meetings, and evaluation of the course notes and Module as a whole.
As Coordinator and Lecturer of Chinese Herbal Medicine he designed, developed, organised and managed all aspects of the course. This included the course notes, module learning guides, scheduling the student tutorials, lecturing and supervising clinical training and chairing Lecturers' Module meetings.
Alan Treharne attends Academic Board meetings in order to interface with other Coordinators and Heads of Departments. This gives him an overview of the entire University curriculum as a whole. At these meetings he helps to decide upon policy where necessary and joins in discussions which resolve issues pertaining to individual students, staff policy and the University ethos. As a member of the Examination Board, he reviews student performance and decisions are made where appropriate.
